Ocean Spirit Cruises offers daily cruises to Michaelmas
Cay for snorkelling, diving and sailing on Australia's magnificent Great
Barrier Reef. Set Sail aboard a five star catamaran and enjoy a reef
experience second to none, whilst capturing the spirit of the Great
Barrier Reef. You will be able to spend 4 hours on the Reef.
Divers can do up to 2 dives and those who have never
dived before can practise the basic skills in the shallow waters of the
coral cay and receive a PADI Certificate of Recognition. You can be
assured of the attention you need as you will only dive in groups of a
maximum of 4. Those who aren't to keen on getting in the water can go on
glass-bottom boat and semi-submersible tours (basically a floating
submarine with windows).
The vessel Ocean Spirit I has a sister
vessel that goes to Upolu Cay and Oyster Reef.
Michaelmas Cay
Michaelmas Cay is a small vegetated coral cay (1.5 ha in area and 3.5
m high) lying 43 km north-east of Cairns. The cay sits on the western tip
of Michaelmas Reef, a mid-shelf reef formed by living coral animals,
polyps which secret a limestone skeleton.
The cay itself was formed when fragments of the reef (coral, algae and
shells) were washed to the leeward side of the reef by wave action and
prevailing winds, to form a single bank. In the sheltered areas behind the
sand bank, seeds deposited by birds and waves are able to establish,
stabilising the cay and encouraging seabirds to roost and nest.
Their droppings fertilise the sand and more plants are able to grow.
Vegetation covers the centre of the cay.
